Book Talk Reflection. What stuck out to you today in class? Which books sounded most interesting? Why did these books appeal to you?

It’s weird how I’m presenting not in front of the class. It feels less scary and more comforting because I’m able to sit in my chair and not be able to see my whole class. However, I feel like it’s a lot harder to engage with the audience. I don’t really know how to make eye contact and where to look because I’m in front of a screen.

A few presentations really stood out to me. I really liked how Christina showed the pictures in the book. I wish I’ve done that too because in The Devil in White City, there were also a few photos of the Chicago fair which really helped me visualize the grandness of the fair. However, I didn’t have my book with me so I couldn’t do that. I also really liked Dylan’s presentation. He had really good critics of what he liked and didn’t like about the novel. By giving specific examples, he’s able to let us understand better what he means with his constructive criticism. Micah’s presentation was pretty interesting. It’s nice to hear his opinion about the book because I’m planning to read this book for this quarter. Overall, all the presentations were pretty good.

  1. I had a difficult time engaging with he audience as well. I think it was much different from giving a speech in person in front of the actual class because you can really only make eye contact in one place whereas during the presentation you normally have a wider area you can look at to make eye contact. I think your presentation was really interesting and it actually caught my attention for reading the Devil in the White City. I got it because I enjoy mysteries and I’m glad to hear that it lives up to your expectations.

  2. I agree that it was very different presenting online. Although you don’t have to deal with being in a room with everybody staring at you, it is hard to connect and engage with your audience. It also was weird trying to make eye contact when all you see is an iPad with no silence in a room alone. I am glad you are reading Shoe Dog. I hope my review helped. It is a story that is very differs from your initial expectation of the book. Great job on your presentation as well!

  3. I also liked how Christina showed pictures in her book and it gave me the idea to do the same thing in my presentation. I am thinking about reading The Devil in the White City this quarter so the fact that you mentioned it has pictures makes me more interested in reading it. I agree with you that Dylan’s presentation was interesting because he offered very good critiques on the book.

  4. I also thought it was effective how Christina showed us the pictures because it added a visual to her presentation rather than speaking for the entire time. I’m also kind of worried about the eye contact during the presentation. I know I’ll try not to look at my notes too much, but I’m not sure if I should look at the camera or at the screen where I can see everyone. I think personally, it’s harder to present virtually even though it might be more comfortable because I won’t be in the same atmosphere as everyone, which usually allows me to focus more and connect with them.

  5. I have not gone yet but I do agree it seemed quite scary to sit up there all alone trying to present in front of an almost silent audience. I think everyone did a great jump regardless of their circumstances and every book seems intriguing. I also agree with you on Christina’s point about the effectiveness of pictures as my book contained a good handful. Otherwise good job presenting!
