Last year was my first year in Hawaii and my first time attending ‘Iolani Fair. None of my old schools have any carnivals or fairs (other than college fair but that doesn’t count). ‘Iolani fair was the first time I’ve attended a fair for a really long time. It’s a really different experience because I’m with my friends instead of my parents. In addition, I’m attending the fair a sophomore and not as a 5 years old kid. I didn’t really help out with the fair other than working my shift. To most people, they are probably really used to seeing the campus get transformed into a carnival every year. For me, I thought it was crazy how a school can bring in all the ride and fit them all onto that baseball field. To see the clips of the fair from my ‘Iolani acceptance video happen in front of me in real life was crazy. I was able to see the process of that fair being built everyday from my dorm window. There wasn’t a specific event that was my favorite. It was just a different experience, and I had a lot of fun just hanging out.
My fair memory is actually very similar to yours. Since I came from such a small school, our definition of a school fair was just playing tag out in the field or planning sport games that we would run for the younger kids. I also had that moment of “awe” at how a school could come together and put on such a big carnival. I also agree that just the experience as a whole was really fun and a great memory of hanging out with friends.

Like Dylan and Sabrina I am still relatively new to the whole ‘Iolani fair experience. As a senior this would’ve been my fourth time attending ‘Iolani fair but I still remember as a freshman, the week before fair and seeing all of the rides being set up. It was definitely an extremely new experience because like the both of you I also came from a small school before ‘Iolani, and I also had my moment of “awe”. I agree Dylan, Fair is much more than a regular carnival it is an opportunity for the ‘Iolani community to come and work together to put on such an amazing event.
